Good to know

  • Phone photos stay the right way up: the rotation stored in the file is applied before converting.
  • JPG has no transparency, so converting to JPG fills transparent areas with white. PNG and WebP keep transparency.
  • Converting re-encodes the picture, so camera metadata (EXIF: date, camera settings, GPS location) is not copied to the new file. That also means a converted photo no longer reveals where it was taken. To see what a photo carries first, open it in the EXIF viewer.
  • Large photos, 48 MP and up, take a few seconds each. If a browser cannot hold one at full size, it is saved at the largest size that browser allows and labelled so in the list.

Why so many images are WebP

WebP is an image format Google released in 2010 to make web pages lighter. Google’s own comparison found lossy WebP files 25 to 34% smaller than JPGs of the same quality, so websites, shops and image CDNs serve it whenever the browser accepts it. That is why “Save image as” so often gives you a .webp file.

When to convert WebP to JPG

Browsers show WebP everywhere, but plenty of other software still does not: older versions of photo editors, many print labs and photo-book services, some email clients and upload forms that only list JPG and PNG. JPG is the format all of them accept.

What changes in the JPG

Most WebP images are already compressed lossily, so converting to JPG is a second round of compression: keep the quality high, 90% or more, and the file will usually come out larger than the WebP. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. An animated WebP becomes a still JPG of its first frame.

Changing the format is the quick part. If a shoot also needs colour correction, retouching or background work, our editors can take it on. Try us on a few of your own photos first.

Frequently asked questions

Why do images I save from websites come out as WebP?

Because the website serves WebP to browsers that support it, to make its pages load faster. The browser saves the file it was sent, which is the WebP.

Will converting WebP to JPG reduce the quality?

Slightly, because JPG compresses again. At 90% quality or above the difference is very hard to see. Converting cannot restore detail the WebP compression already removed.

What happens to a transparent or animated WebP?

JPG supports neither. Transparent areas are filled with white, and an animated WebP is saved as a still image of its first frame. Convert to PNG instead if you need to keep transparency.

Can Photoshop open WebP files?

Photoshop opens WebP natively from version 23.2, released in 2022. Older versions, and many other editors and print services, need a JPG.
