Newborn Skin Behaves Like Nothing Else
A newborn is not a small adult to retouch. The skin is translucent, so it picks up colour from the wrap it is lying on. It is mottled and blotchy by default, and it changes within the session — a baby moved from one pose to the next goes red, then settles, then goes red again. Frames five minutes apart can need completely different corrections.
Run adult portrait retouching over that and you get a doll. The skin goes uniform, the translucency disappears, and the picture loses the exact quality that made the parents book the session. The fix is a much lighter hand aimed at the temporary things — the redness of being handled, jaundice yellow, milk spots, peeling, the purple of new hands and feet — while everything characteristic stays.
There is also the compositing. Most of the poses parents ask for are held by a hand that has to come out afterwards, merged from your safety frames. Done properly it is invisible; done badly it is the one thing an experienced newborn photographer will notice immediately.

Soft, Natural Finish
Peeling skin, scratches from tiny fingernails and the odd stray hair tidied, while the downy lanugo and the creases parents actually want kept stay put.

Wraps, blankets and backdrop creases smoothed, prop edges tidied, and the background eased back so nothing competes with the baby for attention.

Jaundice yellow and the purple-red of newborn hands and feet brought back to a natural tone, with the warmth of the session kept rather than neutralised out.

Newborn editing questions
How much does newborn photo editing cost per image?
Newborn retouching is $1.00 per image. That covers skin tone, redness and rash reduction, background softening and general cleanup. Multi-frame composites of supported poses are included on request.
Will my babies still look like babies?
That is the whole constraint of the service. Adult retouching applied to newborn skin produces a doll — uniform, opaque and lifeless. We work much lighter and target only temporary things, leaving translucency, downy hair and creases alone.
Can you fix baby acne, milk spots and cradle cap?
Yes. Baby acne, milk spots, cradle cap, dry and peeling patches, and scratches from fingernails are all standard. Tell us if a particular family wants the peeling left in — some parents specifically do.
Can you correct jaundice?
Yes. Jaundice yellow is corrected back to a natural skin tone without draining the warmth out of the rest of the frame, which is the usual failure when it is done with a global white balance shift.
Can you remove the hands supporting the baby?
Yes, if you shot the safety frames. Send the supported shot along with the frames covering the hidden areas and we will composite them so the finished pose looks unsupported. Never attempt the pose without support to save the edit.
What about the purple-red hands and feet?
That is normal newborn circulation and it photographs much stronger than it looks in the room. We bring it back toward the tone of the rest of the skin rather than removing the colour difference entirely.
Can you tidy the wraps and backdrop?
Yes. Creases in wraps and backdrops are smoothed, prop edges tidied, and the background eased back so nothing pulls attention off the baby. Background work is part of the standard rate.
Do you edit sitter, milestone and cake smash sessions?
Yes, at the same rate. Older babies need less skin work and more background and prop cleanup, but it is the same service and the same $1.00 per image.
Can I see it on my own photo first?
Yes. Send your reddest, blotchiest frame and we will edit it free, with no card required. Judge whether the skin still reads as newborn before you send a session.
